Common Tussock (male)

Argyrophenga antipodum

Description:

Endemic to Aotearoa, this beautiful male Common Tussock has a distinctive orange patch with a black patch which has two white dots in the centre. The hindwing has an orange patch with three black patches with a single white dot in the centre (see pic 1) They have very distinct silver streaks (see pic 2) on the underside of their wings which, when they are closed, makes them well camoflaged as they blend in with the blades of grass.

Habitat:

Sitting on some grass amongst native plants and grasses, in the middle of the track in Okia Reserve (https://www.yellow-eyedpenguin.org.nz/ou... ).
