A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Epilobium hirsutum
A herbaceous plant about a metre tall with hairy stems and long leaves. Pink-purple flowers had 4 notched petals and a long4-lobed white stigma.
Seed pods were long and slender and some of them had burst open to reveal small black seeds caught in riotous silk - probably waiting for wind to disperse them.
Spotted in a ditch meant to catch the overflow from a nearby lake - Birdsland Reserve.
This species has been introduced to Australia. It is a native of Asia, North Africa and parts of Europe. It grows in damp habitats.
Family: Onagraceae
