European mantis

Mantis religiosa

Description:

Its common name praying mantis is derived from the distinctive posture of the first pair of legs that can be observed in resting animals. It resembles an attitude of prayer. Both males and females have elongated bodies with two pairs of wings. The most striking features shared by all Mantodea are a highly mobile triangular head with large compound eyes and its first pair of legs, which are highly modified for the efficient capture and holding of fast-moving or flying prey.

Habitat:

Among the grass of an urban garden
