Trypoxylon californicum
Black wasps with white on the face. The abdomen is half red with the end half being black and clubbed. The wings are clear for the front 2/3 and the end 1/3 is smoky. The first image is of the male bringing food to the nest. The second image is the female looking out for him to return again. The third was taken with my phone and shows the white outline markings on the thorax.
Nesting in a small hole in our chicken coop. This hole was already existing. They do not bore into wood.
