Sherman's fox squirrel

Sciurus niger shermani

Description:

A pale gray body, black and tan flecked tail, distinctive black face with a large white patch between her eyes and nose. This is a female and it is evident she is nursing young.

Habitat:

This is a subspecies of fox squirrels, which live in the southeastern United States. This female was spotted on Jackson Lake Island, on the Alabama River, near Millbrook. A movie set from the film, Big Fish, remains in place here in this park area, which has a mowed lawn under large trees, with camping and picnic areas nearby. The river banks have natural vegetation and many cypress trees, including bare stumps in the water, and Spanish moss.

Notes:

This squirrel shares her environment with other wild animals such as alligators, turtles, deer, snakes, and foxes. A flock of goats also lives on the island, which is privately owned and tended by a conscientious and hospitable family, who also live there.
